The ABC’s of Fall Fashion

Someone DM’d me the other day about how bad the fall fashion inspiration is on the internet. It’s true. If you google Men’s Fall Fashion Inspiration, you’re going to find a mixed bag of results. From outdated posts from 5-10 years ago to crazy outfits that would never look good on normal guys like you and me, it can be difficult and time consuming to sift through what’s good and what isn’t. So today, I wanted to break down the ABC’s of fall fashion – 2024 edition.

Most of these ideas are timeless and will last beyond 2024. Some may be trends that are popular this year. And some may be a bit of a stretch because let’s be honest, there are only so many fashion concepts that start with the letter X. Some of the ideas will be basic concepts, and others will be anything but elementary. So without further ado – let’s get into it!

A is for Accessories

Accessories are a year-round staple and might be at slightly less of a premium during the fall and winter seasons. As you cover up with layers, the smaller items become a bit less important. But they still add a level of thoughtfulness to your look. My go-to accessories are a watch and sunglasses regardless of the outfit. Two of my favorite watches right now are the Citizen Tsuyosa and the Seiko SRPK87. Or, check out my blog on affordable watches at any price point. My go-to sunglasses are the Ray-Ban RB2180. I’ve also been liking the new Buck Mason Sunglasses as well. Beyond that, I only ever wear my wedding ring – but some guys enjoy accessorizing with additional rings or bracelets as well. It’s definitely up to you to experiment a bit!

B is for Barn Jacket

No clothing item has had the glow up on social media over the past few months that the Barn Jacket has. It plays perfectly into those rugged fall tones with its earth-tone colors and corduroy collar detail. J. Crew has brought back theirs from the 80s, even featuring a vintage drop. LL Bean has another classic style Barn Jacket offering. Or if you want something a bit more modern, try the cropped option from Uniqlo.

C is for Corduroy

While corduroy pants get all the publicity (for better or for worse), one thing I have my eye on this fall is corduroy tops! I like this corduroy shirt from J. Crew, or the corduroy shirt jacket from Abercrombie. It’s a great way to add another texture to your simple outfits!

D is for Denim

If you know anything about me, I love denim! I wear jeans essentially every day from October through June. While the downfall of skinny jeans has been highly documented, it also seems like really baggy jeans are on the way out as well. As always, I think finding that middle of the spectrum is often your best bet. So, look for a straight fit pair of denim that fits your body well. If you nail that, you are going to look great 99% of the time. A few of my favorites right now are any of the denim from Buck Mason, the loose jeans from Abercrombie, the loose straight jeans from Madewell (both poorly named “Loose” as they really are just straight fit with a tad bit more room), and the high rise denim from Suitsupply. As far as color goes, I think a dark rinse denim is perfect for fall. It seems to be especially on trend this season. Mid washed blue, black, or even a cream/ecru denim are all perfect fall options as well.

E is for Earth Tones

Fall fashion is all about leaning into those earth tone colors. After a summer of brighter shades, I for one am really looking forward to the earth tones of fall. Whether it’s a pair of olive chinos, a brown knit, or even a cream colored shirt jacket, they are perfect for the season!

F is for Flannel Shirts

The flannel shirt is an all time fall classic. For the all time classic version, you probably think of a Buffalo Check – which is great to fully lean into the flannel vibe! But, if you want to shy away from the lumberjack energy or keep a more refined style, even wearing the material in a more neutral tone is a great way to incorporate the function without leaning into the fashion.

G is for Gilet

Ok, I might be cheating here a bit. But a Gilet is essentially a European word for a vest or sleeveless jacket. And while we are definitely trying to avoid the finance bro look with the Patagonia vest, I think it can be a nice layering piece especially during the fall season. My favorite way to wear a vest or gilet is to pair it with a chunky knit sweater for a cozy look. Old Navy has an affordable corduroy version. Suitsupply has a couple of elevated options that I really like. Or, for something more casual, this Nike ACG fleece vest is really cool as well!

H is for Hats

Hats are an all-season accessory for me! But, I do think the colder months offer you the most possible variety in headwear. While you wouldn’t want to wear a wool hat in the summer, something like the Ebbets Field Flannels hat would be a great way to add texture to a fall outfit. You could also get cozy with a beanie from Abercrombie. Or, you can never go wrong with the classics like the 47 Clean Up!

I is for Ivy Style

One of the biggest trends the past year or so has been Ivy Style. Obviously inspired by the Ivy League, the style rose to prominence in the 1950s. As with everything, the style has been cyclically popular a few times since, and it is back in a big way. All things tweed, chinos, oxfords, and loafers paired with casual elements like rugby shirts and white socks define the modern iteration of the style. For Ivy Style inspiration, check out J. Press or Drakes. And while you may not want to fully lean into it, even incorporating elements like a loafer or pair of chinos could be a fun way to experiment with the style!
